Supplements for Chronic Pain

Besides chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, and massage, pain medications are one of the many treatment options for chronic pain. In most cases, they are affordable when prescribed, readily available, and work quickly. However, not everyone can take medications like ibuprofen due to pre-existing conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or concerns about dependency. Others simply prefer more natural options for managing chronic spinal pain.

Natural relief supplements can be an excellent alternative to traditional over-the-counter drugs. They are generally safe, come with minimal to no side effects, and are widely accessible. Below are some of the most noteworthy supplements for natural pain relief.

SAM-e

SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) occurs naturally in the body. It may act as a pain reliever comparable to ibuprofen. According to WebMD, SAM-e has been used to ease the pain of fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraines, and bursitis. It has also been applied in the treatment of depression. SAM-e is widely available in most health food stores.

MSM

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is another naturally occurring chemical in the body, often taken as a supplement to manage arthritis symptoms. WebMD indicates MSM has been used to help treat joint inflammation, skin conditions, and gastrointestinal issues. MSM is readily available at grocery and drug stores and is often combined with Glucosamine Chondroitin.

Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are compounds found in cartilage, used primarily to slow joint degeneration, especially in the knees and hips. Some suggest it may even reverse joint damage, though evidence is limited. It is widely available in grocery and drug stores and is often sold with MSM.

Important Considerations

  • Always consult your primary care physician before taking supplements, especially if you are on medications, pregnant, or nursing.
  • While supplements typically have fewer side effects than prescription medication, results may take time. Some require up to 6 weeks of consistent use before benefits appear.
  • Supplements vary in quality. Some manufacturers add non-effective ingredients or reduce dosages. Price alone does not determine quality — physician-prescribed supplements from reputable sources are the safest option.
